About Budding Scholars

Budding Scholars offers flexible childcare and childminding to people in Newport and the nearby areas of Rogerstone, Risca, Cross Keys and Cwmcarn. We provide a learning through play setting for families who choose home based childcare above state or private nursery. We provide an excellent service to all parents and children.

About Us

Welcome to our website, we are Jacqui and Mike Handley, we are both 54 and we live in the Rogerstone Area of Newport City. We have two grown up sons and two grandchildren, we are also foster carers for Newport City Council. We have both been registered childminders for 3 years (see our photograph below)and thoroughly enjoy our work.

We understand how difficult it is in todays society for working parents to be able to manage working whilst providing the best level of care they can for their children. In our setting we are able to meet childrens individual needs, provide activities which will stimulate them and build their self esteem and by providing an early years curriculum which will help them develop and meet their full potential.

Registered Childminders

We have been registered with the Care Standards Inspectorate for Wales (CSIW) for 3 years and have a Certificate of Registration issued by them allowing us to care for children under eight years of age.

Our last Inspection Report is dated 20 April 2005 and is available for parents to look through.

We have an Enhanced Criminal Records Disclosure(CRB)Certificate.

Our public liability insurance is with Royal Sun Alliance through N.C.M.A

All our vehicles are insured for business use.

Qualification and Training

We have both completed the following qualifications and training:
Council for Awards in Children's Care and Education (CACHE)- Level 3 Award in Childminding.

Paediatric Basic Life Support Plus

The Royal Society for the Promotion of Health:
Foundation Certificate in Food Hygiene.

We have both attended training course on:
Using Music in a Home-based Setting, Reflective Practice & Risk Assessment, Welsh Workshop, Lego Workshop, Raising Awareness of Child Abuse and Child Protection, Multi Cultural Evening, Using Persona Dolls and continue to follow a programme of training recommended by the National Childminding Association, and other recognised organisations to help enhance our knowledge and understanding so that we can offer the best standards of Care and Education to the children we look after whilst they learn and develop their knowledge and understanding.
We are members of the NYPCP Children Come First Network and are working towards Accreditation to teach Early Years Education.

Newport in Bloom

June 13, 2006

Have a look on our activities page to see photographs of the children enjoying their day out at Newport in Bloom.

Newport is hoping to win the award for the best city in bloom. Lots of hard work has been put in to make Newport look bright and colourful for its residents.

National Waterfront Museum, Swansea

February 21, 2006

The children enjoyed a very interesting and informative day when we visited the museum in Swansea. They saw pictures and films about coal and coalminers, lots of photographs of large ships.

The children looked in amazement at the large models of cars and aeroplanes. They saw photographs of how things looked in yesteryear. How kitchens were set out, dinning room etc. and what clothes people wore. They were amazed at the long full dresses ladies wore and laughed at the men in their top hats. They saw films about coalmines and how the miners excavated the coal from the mines.

They had lunch and entered a colouring competition, they enjoyed it so much they all want to go back again soon.
